Theatre Companies & Arts Education
The Arts Club Theatre Company is the largest theatre company in Western Canada. Each year, over a quarter of a million people experience the best in professional theatre at its three venues: the Stanley Industrial Alliance Stage, Granville Island Stage, and Goldcorp Stage at the BMO Theatre Centre, as well as on tour throughout the province. Its popular productions range from musicals and contemporary comedies to new works and classics. The Arts Club also expands its audiences outside Vancouver through a three-show mini-season tour presented at venues around British Columbia.
Arts Umbrella is where young artists ages 2–22 cultivate their creativity in Dance, Theatre, and Art & Design. As a non-profit centre for arts education, they believe that art is powerful. Powerful enough to change kids’ lives in incredible ways. When young people connect with the arts, they gain self-confidence, develop self-discipline, and discover creative expression—qualities they carry with them for life.
Led by Artistic Director Medhi Walerski, Ballet BC is Canada’s preeminent contemporary dance company. Founded in 1986 by David Y. H. Lui, Jean Orr and Sheila Begg, with Annette av Paul as founding Artistic Director, Ballet BC has been at the forefront of the creation, production, and education of contemporary dance in Canada and around the world for almost 40 years.
Since their inception in 1996, Boca del lupo’s mission is to create and present extraordinary performances in unconventional spaces. Working across cultures and disciplines, their productions are energized by the collision and confluence of difference.
Carousel Theatre for Young People (CTYP) is a gathering place for young people, families, and artists to embark on a journey where boundless imagination, a dash of magic, and an abundance of play are the recipe for a magical theatrical adventure that has lasting impact. They have been creating theatre for young people since their inception in 1976.
The Improv Centre is Vancouver’s leading and best known improv theatre company. It was originally formed in 1981 under the name The Vancouver TheatreSports League.
Festivals & Outdoor Events
The first of its kind in North America, the Vancouver International Children’s Festival began as a theatre festival for young audiences presenting international performances. Today the Festival is multi-disciplinary presenting theatre, music, dance, circus, puppetry and storytelling and over the years has been an inspiration to major cities throughout Canada and abroad, where annual children’s festivals now take place.
The Vancouver Fringe is a celebration of all kinds of theatre, cultivating artists and audiences to create an open and vibrant independent theatre community. Formed in 1983, its mission is to produce “Theatre for Everyone” in Vancouver.
Through her works, Rosario Ancer has created a platform where flamenco and a new generation of flamenco artists can flourish in Vancouver creating an eastward bridge that connects the wide, national, flamenco community. Flamenco Rosario holds a mandate to develop dance, music works, and dance artists, in both the authentically traditional and contemporary innovative styles of Flamenco.
The mission of Coast Jazz and Blues Society (CJBS) is to not only increase the appreciation of the music, but to strengthen the arts community by developing special projects, artistic exchanges, partnerships, educational initiatives, community programs, and collaborations that further the art form. Their vision encompasses a wide spectrum of jazz, blues, world, creative, and improvised music.
Latincouver creates a socio-economic space to promote relationships and cultural exchange among Latin Americans and the Canadian mosaic. Each year, Latincouver produces the Latin American Heritage Month Festival.
New Works is an innovative platform for developing communities through art engagement, by supporting artists and cultivating audiences, and by providing and supporting diverse and inclusive performances. New Works presents events that are educational and entertaining, and that promote cross-cultural understanding.
The PuSh Festival expands the horizons of Vancouver artists and audiences with work that is visionary, genre-bending, multi-disciplined, startling, and original. The Festival is a broker of international partnerships, a meeting place for creative minds, a showcase of Canada’s best, and an incubator of brilliant new work.
The Festival’s mission is to connect people to exceptional books, ideas, and dialogue through year-round programming that ignites a passion for words and the world around us. In its 30+ year history, the Vancouver Writers Fest has presented multiple award-winning writers from Canada and around the world, including Margaret Atwood, John Irving, David Sedaris, Salman Rushdie, and more.
